Kata mop berasal dari suatu nomina (kata benda) bahasa Belanda: mop, lelucon. Bentuk tunggalnya adalah (een) mop=(suatu) lelucon sementara bentuk jamaknya, moppen, berarti lelucon-lelucon.

Zaman Belanda di Papua Barat atau Nederlands Nieuw Guinea memperkenalkan kepada orang Papua didikan Belanda istilah April Mop: Lelucon April. Tanggalnya jatuh pada 1 April setiap tahun. Untuk memperkenalkan budaya ini, ada guru-guru Belanda yang mengecoh murid-murid Papua tertentu sesuai pilihannya. “Tom”, kata seorang guru Belanda kepada seorang muridnya yang terkenal kocak dan “kepala angin” di kelas, “apa kau ingin nyamuk di jidatmu tetap menyedot darahmu? Kau tidak menamparnya?” Segera Tom yang sangat percaya kata gurunya menampar jidatnya yang tidak disedot darahnya oleh seekor nyamuk sekalipun. Tom melihat tangannya yang tidak berdarah dan tanpa nyamuk yang dipukul hancur dan bingung. “April Mop”, kata gurunya sambil tersenyum. “Setiap 1 April, orang-orang di Belanda saling mengecoh dan tradisi ini sudah berlangsung selama ratusan tahun,” jelasnya.
